Ashley Barty decides to end her career
Former world number one Australian tennis player Ashley Barty has revealed exactly when she decided to end her career.
“In Australia, I just wanted to play one last time, no regrets, just enjoy the moment and see what happens next.
At the Adelaide tournament, I wasn’t so sure about ending my career yet. The first tournament of the season is always a challenge.
Probably after the second round of the 2022 Australian Open, when I sat down to talk to my team, I had a moment where I thought, “You know what, this is my last Australian Open.
I was enjoying tennis, trying to be in the moment, because I’ll never get that time back again,” Barty said on the WTA Insider podcast.
As a reminder, Barty won Roland Garros in 2019, Wimbledon in 2021 and the Australian Open in 2022. Ashley’s best result at the U.S. Open was reaching the fourth round (2018 and 2019).
