Barcelona thrashes Osasuna 4-0, putting Real Madrid 10 points clear at the top of La Liga
Real Madrid tried to take advantage of Sevilla’s previous slip-up, thanks to a first-half goal from Vinicius Junior and a brace from Karim Benzema. Carlo Ancelloti’s side now have a massive 10-point lead over second-placed Sevilla, which could give them a major lift ahead of the Clasico against Barcelona, who beat Osasuna 4-0.
Espanyol vs. Levante (1-1)
As Levante continued to plan their way out of the relegation zone, they hosted Espanyol. Lisci’s team opened the game with a strong offensive mindset, which was unsurprising. They spent the first half of the game debating how the score was still tied. To make matters worse, Javi Puado scored barely five minutes after the break. As Levante pressed for an equaliser, both clubs struck the post.
Dani Gomez pounced on a defensive blunder by Levante to bring the game to a stalemate.
Elche vs Granada (0-1)
Granada entered this game desperate for a win after losing four of their previous four games. Elche, who were just above the relegation zone, were their opponents. Granada’s desperation was palpable in the first few minutes, when they came dangerously close to striking twice. Badia, on the other hand, refused to let both Carlos Neva and Suarez keep it even. Elche scored only minutes after Granada had missed a chance. Fidel Chaves completed a one-touch counter-attack.
Petrovic’s darting run came close to tying the game, but Badia saved Elche once more.
Valencia – Getafe (0-0)
Valencia presented a serious danger to Getafe, who were in 15th position, with two victories and a tie in their past three games. The first half was fairly contested, with both sides having chances to score but neither converting. In the second half, the away team was content to sit back and absorb the pressure.
Getafe was having trouble breaking through their defence. Mamardashvili, on the other hand, booted Gabriel’s back pass directly into Mayoral’s body, and the ball rebounded into the net. Despite this, a replay revealed that it had struck the substitute’s hand, and the goal was disallowed.
Sevilla against Rayo Vallecano (1-1)
Sevilla needed those important three points after a draw to keep their championship hopes alive. The first half was heavily skewed in favour of the hosts, who even had a goal controversially disallowed. In the second half, Rayo Vallecano made apologies as Bebe’s 46th-minute shot rippled the back of the goal.
Sevilla failed to come up with anything noteworthy. Fortunately for them, Delaney’s first shot on target wound up in the back of the net. In the last minutes, Anthony Martial came close to scoring. Despite this, both teams were forced to settle for a draw.
Alavés against Real Sociedad (1-0)
Real Sociedad were the strong favourites to win this encounter, having dropped only two points since the turn of the year. Things were looking up for relegation-threatened Alaves after two draws in their last two outings. For a large chunk of the game, the away team managed to hold Sociedad at bay.
In the 70th minute, Martin Zubimendi eventually broke the deadlock for the club, netting his first goal in La Liga. Alaves fought for an equaliser, but Sociedad held on with Romero’s saves to take the three points.
Osasuna vs. Barcelona (4-0)
Barcelona began their hectic week with a visit from Osasuna to the Camp Nou. With the Europa League taking place in the middle of the week, Xavi’s team will aim to keep their spirits up. The home side achieved just that, as Ferran Torres’ penalty kicked off Osasuna’s complete dominance. Dembele’s brilliant move set up Aubameyang for the third goal, and the former Star City man earned his second.
In the first half, the game was very well over. Barcelona just moved the ball about before substitute Ruqui Puig scored his first goal of the night, and Barcelona’s fourth overall. The host team had approximately 75% possession at the end of the game.
Athletic Club against Real Betis (1-0)
Real Betis and Athletic Club both had a similar run of form going into this match. The three points would be essential for Betis as they continue to fight above their weight in their quest for Champions League participation. After only 20 minutes, the home team broke the stalemate. Miranda set up Iglesias for the game-winning goal.
Athletic Club did not have trouble creating opportunities, but they had trouble scoring them. Despite Nabil Fekir’s red card in the 80th minute, the hosts were able to earn the three points.
Real Madrid versus. Mallorca (0-3)
Real Madrid had a strong motive to win this game as their championship rivals Sevilla dropped another two points. Mallorca managed to contain them for over an hour while also generating a few scary opportunities of their own.
The expected pairing of Benzema and Vinicius Jr, though, was able to break the tie. The two collaborated once more, with Benzema scoring a penalty before completing his hat trick to win the game 0-3.
